We are a Longbow club who strive to keep this old tradition going.
I am Treasurer for the Bowmen of Caradoc, a group of archers who closely follow the original medieval archery style that made Britain so famous back in the day. We hold many events and enjoy inviting other clubs to come and take a look at our lovely facilities and beautiful views of the Shropshire Hills that adorn our ranges. Unfortunately we have one embarrassment - our toilets. It is the Longbow we shoot - the pride of our men at arms in medieval times, but honestly our toilets appear to come from the same era.
Why are we crowdfunding?
We are now inviting groups from within our community to come and join us for a 'Taster' session on our target field. We know how beneficial archery is as a means of physical exercise, it can be as gentle as you need or more vigorous as your strength improves. To help these community groups to get the benefits available they need to feel comfortable and cared for as they could include some older people, disabled and those not so able bodied as they would like to be, but would you feel comfortable and cared for if the only facilities were a long drop toilet? Well we are not happy to be offering only these facilities so want to build some upgraded toilets more suitable for our guests - so we are Crowdfunding for your help.
How we’ll spend the money raised
We are totally off grid and have no electricity, water or drainage available, nor are we able to connect these services to our archery facilities. It is therefore necessary to provide facilities that do not need any of these services and just to add to the difficulties, the building cannot be a fixed building - it has to be movable. So we have done some research and will be building a moveable shed, that will match our club house/shed, that will be built on skids so that it can be towed to different areas around the field if necessary. We have found a manufacturer who builds incinerator toilets that run on butane gas and a battery complete with extractor ducting which not only function 'off grid' but look smart too and all that we will have to do is empty the inert ash once the toilet has completed its cycle. The shed building is going to be of sufficient size to have a separate ladies/disabled toilet and gents. Both of these will have high windows and be fitted with shelving for hand sanitation facilities and mirrors complete with battery powered lighting.
Community impact
Our plan is to start with 'Taster' sessions and build from there. Once we have been able to explain the benefits of archery to people in the community we hope to start regular monthly sessions so that they can feel the benefit of sport and movement in a fun way. We could inhance this even further by running sessions for school children during the holidays. We could invite other 'holiday activity groups' to join with us and provide the Stretton Community with an activity group to help their fitness levels through movement.
How you can play your part
There are four simple ways to help us reach our target, and make this project a successful reality.
1. Make a pledge. Don’t delay if you’re going to support us because momentum is key to our success!
2. Spread the word. Share our project on your social media pages and tell the world to get behind us! The more people we reach, the more support we will get.
3. Offer rewards. Get involved if you are a local business by donating things we can offer to our supporters. We will give you a shout out!
4. Fundraise for us. If you want to run your own fundraiser – maybe a sponsored activity or similar – use the 'contact project' button at the top of our page to let us know. Setting up your own page only takes a few minutes and you won’t need any bank details. Just a fun idea!
