Throw a Starfish is a small charity with big aspirations to impact world poverty one step at a time. We aim to inspire and enable volunteers to use their time, talent, and finances to achieve this. There is so much to do. Access to good schools, health care, electricity, safe water, and other critical services remains elusive for many people. We recognise that one person cannot change the world, but they can change the world for one person, so we are seeking to inspire and enable volunteers to use their time, talents, or finances to impact poverty one step at a time. Our current focuses are support for autistic children and their families, and education..

The starfish story is the inspiration for our charity. We aim to inspire and enable people to become volunteers to use their time, talents or finances to impact people and communities.
What is the starfish story?
The story is told of how, early one morning, an old man was walking along the seashore and found the vast beach littered with starfish as far as the eye could see. Off in the distance, he noticed a small boy approaching. As the boy walked, he paused every so often, and as he grew closer, the man could see that he was occasionally bending down to pick up an object and throw it into the sea.
The boy came closer still, and the man called out, “Good morning! What are you doing?”
The young boy paused, looked up, and replied, “Throwing starfish into the ocean. The storm tide has washed them up onto the beach, and they can’t return to the sea by themselves. When the sun gets up, they will die, unless I throw them back into the water.”
The old man replied, “But there must be tens of thousands of starfish on this beach. What difference can you possibly make?”
The boy bent down, picked up yet another starfish and threw it as far as he could into the ocean. Then he turned, smiled and said, “It made a difference to that one!”
Our strategy for 2024 -2026
Throw a Starfish strategy concentrates on one country, Kenya and three programmes:
- An Autism programme supporting autistic children (up to 18) and their families.
- An Environmental programme, working with local communities to combat climate change by recycling.
- An Education programme helping schools to develop a more holistic approach to teaching.
Our current focus is Autism Support
Imagine being a child born with autism in Kenya, where resources are scarce and support is virtually non-existent. Sadly, this is the reality for many children in the Mount Kenya region. With limited access to services and a lack of accurate diagnosis, these children and their families face immense challenges every day.
But amidst these struggles, there's a ray of hope: the Kutus Autism Centre. Created through a partnership with Health Charge Medical Centre in Kenya, this center is a lifeline for autistic children and their families. It's a beacon of local, affordable, and accessible support, aiming to fill the void in services and provide much-needed assistance.
The centre will offer a range of affordable therapies, crucial training for families and caregivers, and, in time, improved diagnostic capabilities. It's a game-changer for the region, bringing essential services closer to home and offering a path to a brighter future for these children.
But we can't do it alone. Please support us in any way you can. Thanks you
