Beni orumcegemi benzetiyorsun? Do I remind you of the spider?
WHO WE ARE We are raising funds for The Spider; a fashion film about human connection. The film encapsulates the experience of young Muslim women in urban environments and the trials of modern communication, as two women in a fractured relationship attempt to find common ground. Through clothing and movement we tell a visual story of difficult conversations, and the consequences of othering. The film hopes to examine modern complicity, communication and alienation in young people through an evocative, visceral lens.
The Spider will utilise dark, cinematic visuals. Focusing on the eyes as in Butoh, incorporating “slow dance”movement and layering projection on top. We will explore what happens when you put a “dancer” and “non-dancer” together in physical conversation as a way of showing two contrasting perspectives in dialogue with each other. The film will be set to the haunting voice of Canadian-Muslim vocalist Nemahsis, and the poetry of Firdest herself. The Spider aims to intrigue and challenge the viewer to draw their own conclusions.
We feel this film is acutely relevant at this moment in a time of division and conflict. The film’s release shall be used as a fundraiser for Gaza victims.
