Rowheath Pavilion was commissioned by George Cadbury and opened by the Cadbury family in 1924 – shortly after George’s death. Rowheath Pavilion was built to provide leisure, and recreation facilities for the Bournville community. For 100 years the Pavilion has served as a clubhouse for the sports teams, and Rowheath remains a sporting hub for Bournville and the wider South-Birmingham area.

1924 - 2024

The recreation grounds originally covered 75 acres (Almost twice the current area) and hosted over 224 sports teams (Football, rugby, cricket, tennis, bowls and hockey), whilst the main Pavilion building hosted parties, ballroom dancing, and tea dances. During the second world war, many men joined the war effort and some of the sports pitches were ploughed up for growing vegetables. Sports didn’t fully recover after the war and – due to the expense of running Rowheath Pavilion – much of the land was sold off for housing developments in the 1970s and the Pavilion became derelict for a time in the 1980s. Rowheath Pavilion Limited was established in 1985 to try and revive the community centre, but the site was in a terrible state of neglect and disrepair.

The resident church (Rowheath Pavilion Church) started worshipping at Rowheath Pavilion in the late 1980’s and took on management of the community centre in 1997. In 2003, the church’s existing charity, Trinity Christian Centre (TCC), signed the lease for the pavilion and grounds and have successfully transformed Rowheath Pavilion into a safe, welcoming, and inclusive space for everyone.

What’s currently on offer at Rowheath Pavilion?

To celebrate 100 years of sporting heritage, we have exciting plans to renovate the sports bar, build better toilet facilities, and give a facelift to the sports-side of the building.

Murals, created by Sarah Dickins, are intended to brighten up and connect the space between the changing rooms and the sports bar. Accompanied by festoon lights, bunting, and planters, the two buildings will be better connected, and the space will feel much more welcoming and vibrant.

The Gathering

After listening to our community, we realise that the sports bar and toilets require significant investment. We love and appreciate our loyal guests who have stuck with us over many years, and we want to do something generous for our community to say thank you. The bar and outside seating area will be revamped and rebranded as The Gathering. The name was a popular choice with our existing guests and bar staff; it helps convey a message of community spirit and reflects the Christian values of our charity.

With the help of interior designers, architects, and builders, we have radical plans to raise the standards of the bar and surrounding areas. The bar will not be restricted to sports users, but instead, will continue to be a welcoming and inclusive space for everyone.

Improvements to the Bar

  • Comfortable chairs and bench seating
  • Two large TVs for watching Sky Sports
  • Relaxing ambience
  • Additional space for playing pool, games, and relaxed seating

Improvements to Bar Outdoor Area

  • Increased outdoor sheltered seating
  • More welcoming outdoor space
  • Regular street food available

Demolish and rebuild Toilets

  • Ladies’ toilets
  • Men’s toilets
  • Accessible toilet with baby changer (Unisex)

When will this happen?
