We are raising money to provide fun after school activities educating underprivileged children about climate, environment & sustainability

by Toyin Sanyaolu in Chatham, England, United Kingdom

We are a community interest company based in Kent, UK called The Wonder Lab Project C.I.C. The organisation began, following a university discussion about climate change, the UN sustainability goals, financial inequality and the rate of crime in deprived areas. The purpose of the project is to bridge the increasing gap and teach children from an early age about sustainability, climate change and incorporate STEM in our approach. We identified there are STEM activities growing in the UK but the children benefiting from them are the ones from wealthier backgrounds. Many parents and providers voiced how other children wanted to attend the sessions but were unable to, due to lack of affordability. They felt it was unfair. The founder of the project and idea came from a university student Toyin Sanyaolu and was instantly supported by Jayne Harding who is a lecturer at university and business owner. The company now have Toyin and Jayne as directors and two board members in the areas of business analysis and education. The Wonder Lab Project has also gained the interest of Medway councillors Adam Price and Tracey Coombes of Medway Council who have become committee board members. The vision is to take the activity to as many schools across the country as possible, particularly in underserved areas to inspire, educate and bridge the gap of social inequality. We educate children about climate change and the environment and set a mindset of becoming the innovators of a more sustainable future. All offered for free. No charge to the parents or school, eliminating the worry about affordability. Allowing children from families financially strained to also benefit from these highly beneficial activities.  The project will provide snacks for he children in addition to the activities.  We  have identified the struggle schools are facing with providing science and maths teachers particularly in underserved areas and the struggle to fully educate about climate and sustainability. We aim to be a solution. By providing activities for free to children from financially strained households we will also be able to promote  wellbeing and grow a healthy thriving community. We hope to start this project very soon.
