Hello! We are a group of Third-year BA Film students at Edinburgh Napier University. Our current project, 'The White Nightgown' is based on the true story about Lady Nimmo, also known as The White Lady of Corstorphine.
A young woman, imprisoned and condemned for murdering her uncle, begs her father to save her, but as dusk approaches, she realises his cowardice and greed may seal her fate forever.
Statement from our writer:
I wrote this story because I believe it remains just as relevant today. Women throughout history have been silenced, assaulted, and blamed, while powerful men evade justice. Through The White Nightgown, I want to give Christian a voice and a sense of justice that she may never have received in life and to make a comment on how marginalised victims of assault and mistreatment are still treated today.
Where I live, in Corstorphine, there is a local ghost story about the White Lady, a tale about a woman who killed her lover Lord James Forrester with his own sword in a rage. This immediately fascinated me, especially when I learned that Forrester’s final drunken moments were spent at the Black Bull Inn, the flat I live in.
Through research, I discovered that Forrester was Christian Nimmo’s much older uncle, and I began imagining her perspective: how she must have felt and what could have driven her to such an extreme act. I wondered if anyone in her time ever considered viewing her as a victim before condemning her.
