The Walled Garden offers a very popular free workshop called The Bike Shed. Very keen volunteers give up their time to teach others how to maintain and repair their bikes, including children and their parents (very popular with the school next door). The idea is to help with repairs and servicing bikes - increasing bike usage in the area, improving fitness and equally importantly, helping with social interaction and to create a community.
The details below were provided by a volunteer from the WG who is helping to run the bike shed -
'The Bike Shed has been set up to encourage the community to maintain the bicycles they own.
Volunteers with experience with maintaining bicycles are key to Bike Shed. Each volunteer has their own set of tools they have acquired as they have developed their experience.
Bike repair stands allow the bicycle mechanic to have the bicycle firmly off the ground at a good working height for easy access to all parts of the bicycle. This includes rapid removal and replacement of wheels, brake testing and adjustment and gears adjustment.
Punctures are a common problem we deal with and having a good floor or foot pump with accurate pressure gauge is essential for dealing with them effectively. Firstly in finding the hole in the inner tube, then in pumping up the tire to the correct pressure.
This also means we need puncture repair kits to fix the punctures
We are working with Bicycle Links to see if they are able to provide other consumables such as brake blocks and cables.
Where bike specific parts, inner tubes, tires, etc are needed we advise where they might be obtained and help fitting them.
There are now over 10 bicycles that are now roadworthy and being ridden where the owner had been going to scrap them. Numerous others are in use as a result of repairs, encouragement and social interaction'.
The group have had some kit donated but need more -
Bike stand £144.99
Pump £55.54
6 x Puncture kits £ 48.21 each
