My name is Rowchell Green, I am a university finalist studying Psychology with Education Studies at Warwick University. At the beginning of this year, I decided to launch a social enterprise called, 'The Uniform Project UK'.
The Uniform Project UK aims to provide students with repurposed uniforms and resources to remove the burden that parents/carers face when enrolling their children in school. Uniforms and academic resources contribute to the quality of a child's education and without these items, children across the UK are at risk of exclusion, bullying, and isolation. Through our campaign, we plan to sustainably equip students with clothing and resources, whilst reducing the environmental impacts of wastage.
This is especially crucial because the UK is in an economic and environmental crisis. Affording uniforms and academic resources amounts to a great expense for families, and fast fashion contributes to pollution and waste.
BBC News highlighted that the costs of uniforms in the UK are increasing and total to around £315 per primary school child and £337 per secondary school child. Regarding academic resources, Mail Online reported that parents are advised to buy an average of 22 books for a child's time at school, which can be extremely expensive. Furthermore, UnPckd reported that 1.4 million wearable school uniforms are thrown away each year in UK. Whilst uniform sets are seen as a one-time purchase, the fast-rate growth of children, the misplacing of items, and the need for textbooks are underestimated.
This is problematic because there is an expectation for families to return to the pre-covid lifestyle without consideration of the long-term impacts that the pandemic has had on the socioeconomic statuses of households. Additionally, with the increasing risks of climate change, and the rising living costs - it is important now more than ever to enforce a sustainable and affordable education system.
Therefore, The Uniform Project UK will be partnering with local schools within the Coventry region to encourage families to donate gently used items, for others to reuse. The funding will be used to support our logistical costs such as social media communication and drycleaning.
