The Society of Scottish Artists
We are the Society of Scottish Artists – a dynamic and inclusive organisation with a growing community of more than 1500 members based all over the world. We welcome artists of all disciplines and backgrounds, at every stage of their careers. We provide inspiring and valuable opportunities for all our members, from students and recent graduates to established artists.

As one of the oldest and biggest artist-led organisation in Scotland, we are committed to building on the strong foundation of our rich history, while always seeking to experiment, innovate and challenge tradition. We champion, support and empower our members, and foster connections, partnerships and collaborations, both in Scotland and internationally. We provide a well-established platform for artists working across all disciplines and artforms.
At our heart is a diverse and ambitious programme of members’ exhibitions, residencies, exchanges, social events and development opportunities, the highlight of which is the Annual Exhibition at the Royal Scottish Academy. Our exhibitions programme has grown steadily in recent years, and now extends right across Scotland, in venues ranging from public museums to commercial galleries, as well as online.
The SSA is run by artists for artists, led by a volunteer council.
Our Council is made up of the President, Vice Presidents, Professional, Artist, Honorary and Co-opted Graduate and Student Members who all give their time and individual skills and experience to the organisation, and together are responsible for the direction of the Society.
We also have an active network of Satellite Associates, who are based throughout Scotland, from Orkney to the Western Isles and down to the Borders. They are responsible for expanding the engagement of the Society in their local area, initiating new projects and partnerships, and ensuring that the SSA is an accessible and engaging organisation for our members based right across the country.
