The Roof of Africa

RCN SC047518,

The Roof of Africa provides free education and community support to the poorest families within Tanzania. We begin building our primary school in 2019 and currently have just over 250 pupils enrolled. In addition, we have many community projects such as family reunification, house building and food parcels. We are a Scottish registered charity and have no paid administration staff in the UK, all public funding goes towards the provision of education and family support.

The founder of The Roof of Africa Genuine had a difficult start in life, born in Tanzania due to family tribal traditions and jealously, he was abandoned at the age of 2 and spend many years living on the street before he was befriended by some local children who took him back to their orphanage and he at least had a safe and warm place to stay. His blog is inspiring and can be found on our website https://www.theroofofafrica.org/newsblogs

As an adult Genuine dreamed of helping those in a similar situation to him and after meeting his now wife Freda and moving to Scotland, he found himself able to fulfil his dream.

The Roof of Africa

The Roof of Africa charity began in 2016 when Genuine and his wife Freda rented a building to start a primary school in the community of Sonu, which is about 45 minutes from the foothills of Mount Kilmanjaro. Before long, the school was oversubscribed, and next steps were needed - the building of our own primary school.

Primary school

Tanzania is one of the poorest countries in the world and for many families sending their child to school is impossible. So, when The Roof of Africa was formed, they were so supportive and wanted to help in ways they could including gifting land for our primary school to be built on.

In 2018 work began on our primary school and today we have six classrooms completed, as well as toilets, kitchen and staff room. There is three more classrooms needed, and the primary school will be complete.

This year marks the graduation of our first students, and we have big plans to start building a secondary school, so they can continue their education and help break the cycle of poverty.

In the meantime, we are planning a three month training programme for primary seven pupils to prepare them for secondary school and also to ensure they and their families stay focused on them continuing school. One of the main reasons for this is to protect the girls from early pregnancies and unwated marriaged and to educate the boys as to why this is important. In addition, as the majority of our pupils are only guaranteed food while at school, this will ensure they continue to have nutritious food while wearing for their results.

To be able to provide this training, we require a budget of £1,350. At the Roof of Africa we are a grassroots charity and rely on donations to provide all aspects of our charitable work. All public funding is used directly on our education and community support projects.
