Our Film
What if the smallest decisions, like playing music or finding keys, could completely change the course of your day? For Dan, they do. Two versions of him race against time, each facing a different fate. But as the lines between these realities blur, he realizes that no matter which path he chooses, a shadow of doubt lingers—one that haunts him even as he lies awake at night.
Can Dan break free from this endless cycle of choices, or is he doomed to repeat the same day over and over? Tomorrow, he tells himself, will be different. But will it?
The Opposite of Yesterday investigates the struggle of young people battling ADHD and the all too common 'one size fits all' approach to treatment. With the rising incidence of ADHD, it is crucial that we platform voices of those living with it to understand and accommodate their unique struggles. We are doing this by delving into the intricacies of living with ADHD and asking challenging questions around the cost v benefit of medication. With both our writer/director, Cameron Almanza, and producer, Alexa Delaney-Smith, being diagnosed with ADHD, this story is personal and one we are well equipped to tackle. Our film shines a nonjudgmental light on ADHD, humanising and destigmatising the overwhelming undercurrent of challenges faced.
Our Vision
The creative medium of film is well primed to convey the tension of our psychological drama. Through the lens of a Guy Ritchie/Edgar Wright style, we are creating a body of work which is both visually and sonically interesting. The pacing of our film is paramount to communicating the opposing extremes Dan faces; the hectic, 'tumble-dryer' mind, and the hyperaware, medicated mind.
Budget
With a tight budget of £2200, our film is definitely an ambitious project. However, we have already received incredible support from industry professionals that we have pitched to who believe in our project and our team. This support reaffirms our confidence in the nuts and bolts of our film, as well as enabling us to complete it within this budget.
As demonstrated by this breakdown, our top priorities lie in securing quality talent and kit. We understand the importance of engaging creative solutions to traditional production costs, and have done so to focus our spend on these areas. Engaging with a highly skilled camera team early on has opened the doors for us to explore interesting visual techniques to fulfil our creative vision.
Our Team
With a balance of up-and-coming film talent and experienced industry professionals, our team is ready and prepared to bring this project to life!
Cameron Almanza - Writer/Director
My name is Cameron, I am writing and directing this short film. I’ve been working on this project on and off for about a year now, coming back to it every couple of weeks whilst studying. Now I’ve graduated I can dedicate the time needed to creating this story for an audience.
Whilst ADHD receives a huge amount of attention through great awareness campaigns, the medication prescribed to over 300,000 people in the UK is barely talked about! My personal experience with medication, and the experience of many of my friends, is very complex and often overlooked. I think this film is a great way of expressing what it means to deal with the idea of medication whilst you have ADHD.
James Plested - Director of Photography
Alexa Delaney-Smith - Producer
From my first conversations with Cam about this project, I was hooked. Having recently been diagnosed with ADHD myself, his story resonated with me immediately and I knew it was a one worth sharing. Upon reading the script, this feeling only grew. Cam's vision breathes through the pages and working with him has proven over and over how creatively he operates and how dedicated he is. The energy of the crew we have assembled is a reflection of his passion!
For the past decade I have worked on film/music video sets in various capacities ranging from running, to catering, to hair and makeup, and associate producing. My experience has given me invaluable insights into the practicalities of managing a film set and the experience of each department. I am excited to bring this past experience, alongside my lived experience with ADHD, to create an important and beautiful piece of art.
