Our exciting project is to transform an abandoned wardens' apartment into a therapeutic place for alternative education.

by Mica Jayne Coleman Jones in Nottingham, United Kingdom

The Lilya Lighthouse Education Trust Ltd is a neurodiverse-inclusive trust which is committed to working in partnership with children, young people, families, and our partner schools to create an education which works for everyone.

We have an exciting opportunity to transform what was once a wardens apartment into a provision which could make an enormous difference to the life of a child. In Nottingham, hundreds of children are without an appropriate school place and we hope to reduce that number by co-designing a school and its curriculum with neurodivergent young people and their families.

We are in the process of applying to register a charity, but in the meantime we continue to rely on fundraising and donations to make specific purchases or complete specific projects.

If you choose to donate today, your money will be used in one of the following areas:

Garden

We want to turn the outdoor area into a space for growing vegetables and salad, as well as providing learners with a therapeutic garden. Our vision board includes potatoes, carrots, lettuces, wind chimes, benches for restorative conversations, and pots for growing herbs. To achieve this volunteers need to first properly tidy the area. Aluminium staging, a small greenhouse, compost, seeds, and watering cans are needed to grow vegetables and salad from scratch!

Kitchen

Thankfully, little needs doing to the kitchen. The cupboards, however, are empty. Some of the items we need to purchase include cutlery and crockery, and colour coded chopping boards.

Wellbeing Room

We hope to transform one of the old bedrooms into a space which prioritises wellbeing. Part of this project will be taking out a fitted wardrobe and replacing it with a cosy area with a bench for quiet reading or thinking. Shelves will be fitted in the corner of the room to hold storage baskets with sensory items and resources inside.

Quiet Work / Meeting Room

The second of the two bedrooms will be redecorated and modernised so that it can be used for meetings with families or learners. It might also be used for small group work or provide staff with a quiet working/meeting space. Furniture for this room is needed.
