Fight Against Poverty

Help Us Break the Cycle of Poverty for Children

The Grumpy Cook, a not-for-profit café based in Hastings and Milton Keynes, is on a mission to support children from families in poverty. We need your help to make a real difference in their lives.

The Harsh Reality of Poverty

A child born into poverty faces significant challenges from the very start. It’s hard to focus on learning when you’re hungry. The cycle of poverty is a relentless one, often leading children to grow up, have families, and eventually die in poverty, perpetuating the cycle for generations.

The impact on key services is staggering, straining systems that are already at or near breaking point. Our goal is ambitious, but with your help and match funding from other organisations, we can provide crucial support to as many families as possible.

The Urgency of the Situation

In Hastings, one in four children lives in poverty.  Recent research by The National Foundation for Educational Research highlights the dire needs these children face:

  • 12% arrive at school hungry
  • 12% lack adequate clothing
  • 3% are without necessary books or equipment
  • 22% lack a suitable working environment at home

Moreover, a majority of schools are stepping in to fill these gaps:

  • 71% of primary and 72% of secondary schools provide food parcels
  • 94% of primary and 96% of secondary schools provide uniforms and clothing
  • 69% of primary and 79% of secondary schools provide subsidised breakfasts

The income threshold for free school meal eligibility has remained stagnant at £7,400 since 2018/19, despite rising inflation.

Our Goals

We aim to raise funds for:

  • - Access to nutritious meals at our cafés
  • - Clothing for schoolchildren, including underwear, uniforms, shoes, and PE kits
  • - Sanitary products for young girls
  • - Computers and broadband to support learning at the cafe
