What is a MUGA?
A MUGA is a Multi-Use Games Area that provides a sports facility which can incorporate many different sports in one area; including hockey, netball, tennis, basketball and football. Netting can also be installed to provide provision for cricket nets. The all weather surface and floodlighting allows for a wide variety of sports to be played throughout the year.
Why does the School need one?
Sport has been an important part of the School’s ethos and curriculum since its inception. The Langton recognises the substantial benefits of sport for both physical and mental health as well as the development of character. We promote and encourage participation and teamwork at all levels in a wide range of sports. The MUGA allows the school to further diversify its sports provision, allowing us to offer hockey, netball and tennis onsite. It will also be available at lunchtimes for students to enjoy playing sport in a less formal environment.
How will the community benefit?
The Langton prides itself on being more than a School. It is part of the Canterbury community and encourages local clubs, organisations and individuals to enjoy the use of our facilities. The 4G Pitch, Swimming pool, Sports fields and School buildings are regularly used in the evenings and at weekends, and the MUGA will provide further sporting provision to a range of community groups.
How much will it cost?
The cost of the MUGA is £250,000. The fundraising committee are pursuing several funding initiatives and have a programme of fundraising events planned. As was the case when the 4G was built, we are seeking the support of local community organisations, businesses and individuals to make the MUGA a reality. We are starting phase one of the project by crowdfunding £25,000. We have several other funding streams in the pipeline to reach our end goal.
Why the Glover MUGA?
The MUGA is named after Ed Glover, a former pupil of the School who was tragically killed in a car accident in July 2021. Ed was the embodiment of all the values held by the Langton. He was an active participant in a wide range of sports at the school, and local clubs, and won Full School Colours in Cricket, Tennis and Squash, and Half Colours in Rugby and Football.
He had a generous and giving nature and he helped and supported many other young people, both in school and the many sports clubs of which he was a member, as well as helping with causes such as the Sadie Bristow Foundation. The Glover MUGA will allow Ed’s love for sport to live on through others and provide a fitting legacy for a young man who would have gone on to inspire generations of young people to play sport.
