As active members of the community of Bethersden, we set up this organisation earlier this year to save our local pub which shut in October 2020. If the owner cannot sell the property, he intends to turn it into a residential dwelling in the future, and then the pub will be lost forever. We have strong support within the village for a community pub with over 200 interested members already as well as support from Bethersden Parish Council, Ashford Borough Council and our local MP.
We’ve run 2 well attended engagement events to talk through our approach with the community to get their ideas and feedback, and nearly 200 people completed our community questionnaire about the importance of The George to the village and what they’d like from it in the future.
99.5% of our respondents said The George is important to the village.
Our purpose is more than just to re-open the pub, but over 5 years to turn it into a community hub, helping combat social isolation, provide community facilities, supporting vulnerable groups as well as utilising profits for the wider community such as it's clubs and societies.
