We are a voluntary community group in Sheffield that helps to look after our waterways.
We run weekly volunteer days to help keep an 8 mile stretch of the River Don and Tinsley Canal clean, tidy and accessible to all. This involves cutting back overhanging vegetation, litter picking, tackling invasive species and footpath repairs. We also do wildflower planting, install bird boxes and repair fishing platforms/fencing when we have specific grant funds to do so.
The group is a mix of young and old from all backgrounds who work together to make the river corridor and canal towpath a pleasant place to be. It helps wildlife and people and provides a quiet haven away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
It doesn't cost a lot to run our sessions and this funding will keep us going for over a year!
We have our own tools but need funding to cover:
Van hire to get the tools and equipment to site
Money to cover volunteers travel expenses so they are not out of pocket for helping
Insurance costs
Refreshments to provide volunteer with a cup of tea and a biscuit.
Replacement of tools/equipment that get worn out such as litter pickers, bow saw blades and bin bags.
Printing costs to produce a poster with all our dates on to encourage new volunteers.
Training costs for first aid and health and safety so we can be sure we are covered whilst on site
