Continue developing a community garden which brings people together to produce fresh vegetables for the Ark Community Hub Food Bank.

In September 2023 a plot of land was obtained with a vision to create a community garden where people would be able to socialise and build friendships while working together to develop the site and produce fresh vegetables for those in need in our city.  The site was overgrown with weeds and debris. A group of volunteers came together to help clear the site.

During 2024 development of the garden continued. With the help of donations a tool shed, toilet building and polytunnel were purchased and installed. Gravel paths were developed along with the creation of vegetable plots and growing beds.

Alongside the development of the garden, vegetables were also being grown and harvested and donated to the Ark Community Hub Food Bank.  (The Ark Community Hub Food Bank provides food parcels and hot meals to support those in need in the city of Nottingham.)

We would like to thank the volunteers who came along and supported the project. The volunteers were able to help in various areas as well as socialising with each other over a hot cuppa and a bite to eat! Tending a garden, working outdoors and seeing plants grow provides a therapeutic experience while connecting with nature and with each other.

Comments from volunteers:

“I love to be a volunteer in The Ark Community Garden because it's a space where the community can meet together. It is an opportunity to share ideas and chat as well as watch the plants come alive. It's a super space!”

“When I went just to visit the garden I loved it so much I asked if I could be part of the team as I found it very therapeutic and also good for my mind body and soul. I was shown how to repot tomato and pepper plants and I am looking forward to seeing how they are getting on.

"There is so much to do there and the atmosphere is so full of love and friendliness I came away feeling very blessed. I’m so looking forward to doing more to help the team in the future but even by doing little things for them they were so grateful."

The next stage of the project during 2025 is to continue clearing the ground, removing some old buildings, purchasing a shelter for a seating area, and building raised growing beds. Most importantly the growing of fresh fruit and vegetables to supply the food bank will continue. Thank you for your support!
