TASTE OF AFRICA (NORTH EAST)

For over 20 years, Taste of Africa North East has been a driving force in breaking stereotypes, encouraging cultural pride and empowering Black youth through arts, culture and heritage. Based in Middlesbrough, we stand as a pillar of support for refugees, asylum seekers and children of migrants who face racism, bullying and discrimination, helping them build confidence, community and a strong sense of identity.

Founded to celebrate the richness of African heritage and challenge negative perceptions, TOA has grown into one of the North East’s leading Black-led cultural organisations. We host some of the region’s most significant Black cultural events including the Taste of Africa Carnival, the Taste of Africa Showcase and the Black Youth Awards. Every year, these events bring together nearly 10,000 attendees with support from esteemed partners such as Mercedes Benz, Durham University, Network Rail and Tees Valley Combined Authority.

One of our greatest achievements has been the work we have done with young people through mentorship, creative programmes and community engagement. TOA has positively transformed the lives of over 1,000 young people, helping them reclaim their narratives and embrace their potential. But this is only the beginning. There are thousands more young people in our communities who need this same support. With greater funding and resources, we could extend our reach and ensure that no young person is left without the guidance, encouragement and opportunities they need to succeed.

The Creative Youth Leadership Programme is a transformative initiative designed to equip young Black individuals with the confidence, tools and support they need to stand tall in the face of discrimination. Grounded in the African proverb ‘It takes a village to raise a child’ this programme goes beyond skill building. It creates a safe and nurturing environment where young people can truly thrive, embracing their identity and stepping into leadership roles within their communities.

We collaborate with creative professionals to offer career guidance and hands-on workshops in essential skills such as public speaking, cooking, money management, mental health, podcasting, sports, and art creation, to name a few—nurturing both talent and self-belief. However, despite the incredible impact we have made, we are reaching only a fraction of those who need our support.

Your support helps us expand our work, reaching more young people, strengthening our programmes and ensuring that every child we encounter feels seen, heard and celebrated. Your support is the key to making this happen. Let’s work together to build a future where no young person is held back from reaching their full potential.
