At a community centre in Bangalore, India - in the year 2000, surplus food was being distributed among children in the neighbourhood, every single day. This act sowed the seeds of The Akshaya Patra Foundation. Instead of distributing the food in the neighbourhood, a decision was made to do the same in schools. Children then began to reach schools for the meal. This helped them stay away from child labour. And they instead received a guaranteed hot meal a day and also receive Education at the school. With the vision - “No child in India shall be deprived of Education because of hunger," Akshaya Patra started the Mid-Day Meal Programme 22 years ago, and today it runs the WORLD'S LARGEST MID-DAY MEAL service offerinf hot and nourishing food (always free to the child).
In the UK, TAPF UK launched its first community kitchen in Watford in North London. Under the food programmed named 'Nourish to Flourish'- TAPF UK has so far served nearly 300,000 hot meals in just 3 years. The chairty combines innovation, technology with the sciene of Ayurveda to cook its meals.
TAPF UK tackles hunger and malnourishment together. Feeding a child is one thing, feeding a child right - is another.
