Hello!
We are Suspension Theatre CIC. We're glad you've found your way to our Crowdfunder.
We are a female led, Bristol based theatre company on a mission to create unique and socially relevant theatre in their beloved city. We are preparing to take our original verbatim play Sugar? to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this August. If you know us, you'll have heard us talking about this for years. Our first fateful trip was due to happen in August 2020. After it was postponed, all funding applications dried up, and rehearsals were few and far between. But, after these two years of set backs, it's finally time! Good things come to those who wait...
About the play
'Sugar?' was born in 2018 when we first started collecting interviews of people using the facilities in a homeless shelter in Bristol. Our aim was to uncover and highlight the Voices in our city which often go unheard. Over the years, our catalogue of interviews has grown and we have hand picked the best bits to create our script (not an easy task let us assure you)
We interviewed street homeless people, users of homeless support charities, the mayor of Bristol, sociologists and the general public and learned to speak their words exactly as they said them. Their stories were utterly hilarious, painfully relatable and beautifully told and we feel privileged to bring them to life.

Always a bridesmaid, never the bride.
Okay this section has nothing to do with weddings, but the metaphor still stands. During our time as a company we’ve done our fair share of fundraising for worthy causes. We’ve raised over £2,000 sleeping on the streets of Bristol for youth homelessness charity, 1625 Independent people. We volunteer every year for ‘Caring in Bristol’ at Christmas, partnered with Bristol homeless charity ‘Billy Chip’, and we raised £500 from our first tour of ‘Sugar?’ all of which we gave to the ‘Bristol Methodist Centre’, which was where we conducted our first interviews. We now want to ask for your help.
We believe these stories deserve to be heard. We want to share them with as many people as we can, and we believe the Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the place to do this.
We are also very aware of how expensive this mission is, so we are asking for your help...Any spare bit of cash you can donate to us will really help us. Insert pie chart...
BUT! We are very aware of how hard you work, so we are willing to work for your donations!
Our Promise
We plan to walk/swim/run the virtual distance from Bristol to Edinburgh throughout May. That’s 373 miles from Bristol to Edinburgh in 31 days. Think, wild swimming, 80’s gym gear, strava competitions, Sunday hikes, park runs, and sweaty selfies. All shared online, so you can keep up with our virtual journey.
Its gonna be tough
It’s gonna be sweaty,
But it’ll be worth it!
Thankyou! x
