Supporting Grassroots Disability Bowls Development

We did it
On 10th January 2023 we successfully raised £45 with 1 supporters in 14 days

All the funds raised will allow us to continue to introduce Disability Bowls Taster Days across all 35 counties in England.

Project by DISABILITY BOWLS ENGLAND (DBE)

Started on 27th December 2022 Foxhill Rd, Carlton, Nottingham NG4 1RL, UK

The charitable purposes are in the interests of social welfare, with the object of improving the condition of life of people with disabilities and to facilitate their participation in the sport of bowls. Delivering an England wide co-ordinated programme of activities and events we engage and re-engage specifically with disabled people in the sport of bowls often utilising specialist equipment and mobility aids to encourage participation.

For the past 15 months we our Development Officer and volunteers have criss- crossed England and have delivered 12 Disability Bowls Taster & Awareness days to range of different people from Club Members, Coaches & Volunteers, Care home & residential disabilities groups and all areas of people with a disability.  Bowls is a game anyone can play, it’s fun, friendly, competitive and a great way of socialising, by the end of 2022 we have had over 100 new members join Disability Bowls England and various clubs have opened their doors to disability groups using their facilities and joining in the weekly roll ups and fixtures. We have seen an increase in physical & social activity leading to higher self-esteem and improved physical & mental health.

The Bowls Family comprising the Outdoor, Indoor, Crown Green & short Mat format, has over 300,000 members and 5,000 affiliated clubs. It is one of a few sports where 3 generations of the same family can play a sport together regardless of ability, gender, or age.

We currently have 190 registered Disabled Friendly Bowls Clubs who provide accessible facilities along with social and playing opportunities for people with disability to enjoy this sport. We encourage these clubs to obtain disability aids and support their coaches to attend the disability bowls inclusion course in order to give players the best support.

All the funds raised will allow us to train our Disability Bowls Ambassadors and various groups of volunteers to deliver Taster & Disability Awareness days across England and help develop a network of bowls clubs so others can enjoy the sport of bowls with like minded people in a friendly and safe environment.
