Behind The Book Club

The idea was birthed when the three friends, Noemie, Treasure and Muna, who met by chance noticed that outside of nightlife, there were very few opportunities to develop lasting connections with other Black Queer people.

After a while, we noticed that:

  • Most Queer events were nighttime clubbing events, and
  • Outside of pride month, there were few places and events where Black Queers felt fully at home and even fewer where we could congregate and form a community during the daytime.

Our Mission

grounded is here to provide a free learning space for Black Queers 18 and up who are interested in activism, revolutionary work and forming a tight-knit community with like-minded people

How grounded Book Club Works

All resources and refreshments will be provided at no cost to attendees. Our book club sessions host up to 15 people to maintain an intimate space where people can foster connections with fellow members.

In our sessions, we collectively study radical books that cover a range of topics; spanning from class theory to climate justice. Over the past three sessions, we have covered 'Sister Outsider' by Audre Lorde and we are now moving on to 'Vagabonds!' by Eloghsa Osunde. The goal is to utilise both non-fiction and fictional work to develop our praxis by building community and nurturing our radical imaginations.

Our focus is to remove financial barriers to learning and turn our discussions into meaningful action. We achieve this by sharing grassroots initiatives and events and we encourage our members to attend as a collective. This is to ensure that we continue to support and stay rooted in our glocal communities.
