Support AI Research for Reusing Structural Steel

Aim: I'm creating a tool to find steel worth reusing before demolition: saving money, cutting emissions, and reducing waste. Better for the plane

Right now, tons of steel from buildings is thrown away after demolition, even when it’s still strong and reusable. The problem is we don’t have a practical, cost-effective way to check if the steel is safe to reuse before the building comes down.

That’s why I’m developing a digital tool that uses AI and in-field engineering tests to identify reusable steel components before demolition starts. This means we can save valuable materials, reduce construction waste, cut carbon emissions, and lower costs.

Why is this important?

- Steel production is a major source of carbon emissions worldwide.

- Reusing steel reduces the need for new steel, cutting energy use and emissions.

- Currently, demolition waste is mostly recycled as scrap, which still wastes embodied carbon and jobs.

- This tool will help shift the industry toward a circular, more sustainable construction economy.

What will your support fund?

- On-site data collection from demolition projects

- Mechanical testing and lab work to validate findings

- Developing and training AI models to analyze the data accurately

- Software development to build a user-friendly tool for engineers and contractors

- Living expenses to allow me to dedicate full time to this self-funded project

- Expert consultant support in AI, structural testing, and sustainability

Project Timeline

- April 2025: Research begins

- August 2025: Data collection complete

- December 2025: Lab testing and validation finished

- March 2028: AI model and prototype tool ready
