Help Aegis Street Medics Oxford Keep Our Nights Safe
Imagine a safer night out in Oxford City Centre. Every Friday and Saturday night, hundreds of people come to enjoy our city's vibrant nightlife. But sometimes, things can go wrong. Minor injuries, alcohol-related incidents, or someone feeling vulnerable can quickly escalate, putting pressure on emergency services and leaving individuals in need.
That's where Aegis Street Medics Oxford (ASM) comes in...
We're a passionate team of trained volunteers, including first responders and healthcare professionals, dedicated to providing a proactive and mobile first-response medical presence on the streets of Oxford during peak night-time hours (10 pm - 4 am).
Our mission is simple: to enhance the safety and wellbeing of everyone enjoying Oxford's nightlife.
Here's how Street Medics will make a difference:
- Immediate On-the-Spot Help: Our teams will patrol key areas, offering immediate first aid for minor injuries, preventing them from becoming bigger problems and reducing unnecessary trips to A&E.
- Support for Vulnerable Individuals: We'll be a visible and approachable presence, ready to assist those feeling unwell, distressed, or lost, and connect them with further support like Oxford City Angels.
- Early Intervention for Alcohol & Drug-Related Issues: Our trained volunteers will offer initial support and assessment, and crucially, will be equipped to administer life-saving naloxone in suspected opioid overdose situations – a vital intervention highlighted by NHS England.
- Reducing Pressure on Emergency Services: By dealing with minor incidents and providing early intervention, we aim to reduce the demand on Thames Valley Police and the South Central Ambulance Service, allowing them to focus on more critical emergencies.
- Working with Our Community: We'll be collaborating closely with Oxford Nightsafe, local businesses (bars, clubs), and Thames Valley Police to create a safer and more supportive night-time environment for everyone.
We're inspired by the success of similar voluntary schemes like PT Alpha in Kettering and Street Assist in Edinburgh, and we want to bring this vital support to Oxford. The SCAS SOS bus previously provided a similar service in our city and its absence has left a gap we are determined to fill.
Why We Need Your Support:
As a voluntary initiative, Aegis Street Medics Oxford relies entirely on the generosity of our community. Your contribution, no matter how big or small, will directly help us to:
- Equip our volunteers: Providing essential first aid supplies, communication devices, and protective gear.
- Provide vital training: Ensuring our team is highly skilled and prepared to handle a range of situations, including basic life support and the administration of naloxone.
- Cover operational costs: Including insurance, volunteer expenses, and essential administrative support.
- Raise awareness: Helping us reach those who may need our help and grow our volunteer team.
Every pound you donate will directly contribute to a safer and more caring night-time environment in Oxford. Imagine the peace of mind knowing that there's a dedicated team on the streets ready to help if needed.
Join us in making Oxford's nights safer for everyone. Please donate today and share our campaign with your friends and family. Together, we can make a real difference.
Thank you for your incredible support!
- Each response bag carried by our volunteers cost over £800, the bag alone is worth over £300...
- Just £25 could contribute towards the cost of naloxone training for a volunteer - a lifesaving drug used to reverse opioid overdoses
- £50 could help us purchase essential communication equipment, to ensure that we can get to anyone who needs us as soon as possible
- £100 could contribute towards servicing our defibrillators that each of our responders carry.
Let's make Oxford a city where everyone can enjoy a night out safely!
