Stopsley Baptist Church - Greenhouse Mentoring Project

Stopsley Baptist Church

We are a local charity based in Stopsley, Luton. A service for our community, a project of Stopsley Baptist Church, but we are self-funded through local support and national grants and our funds are ring fenced within the finances of SBC. Our focus is to see young people in Luton empowered to unlock their full potential and thrive in life.

We support young people through our group mentoring courses which focus on key areas such as:

  • Dealing with Anger
  • Building Self Esteem
  • Self Awareness
  • online safety
  • Grooming/exploitation
  • friendships and social skills
  • Identity

We are keen to tackle loneliness and isolation among young people and promote healthy friendships within the safety our centre where young people can build on social skills and confidence that they can apply elsewhere.

Our funding allows us to provide free food and snacks to every child who comes along to our sessions.

We believe that no child should feel left out and so we ensure all of our services are free for every child who gets referred to us.

We have a fantastic team of dedicated volunteers who train with us to give their time weekly into ensuring the running of GHM continues to the highest standards.

We accept referrals from professional bodies and organisations such as schools, GP's, CAMH's, CHUMS, Edwin Lobo, and Social Services. Our mentees come from a range of backgrounds and are referred to us for several reasons, usually at the point of crisis, to receive support and encouragement while learning how to overcome hurdles in day to day life.

We believe in supporting as many young people as we can, without extensive waiting lists. In order to achieve this, we set up a Saturday drop-in service for our referred young people to enjoy as soon as possible where they can seek conversations with our mentors and make new friends whilst waiting for a space on our group mentoring.

We have also partnered with local schools and run our courses on site to provide the opportunity to reach more young people. We take our hanging out safety course which is a preventative measure to tackle gangs, grooming, and exploitation in its many forms.
