Aldi submitted an application to develop a green-belt field and 2 industrial units to provide a medium sized food store with parking for 140 vehicles, with the stated potential for 1600 vehicle movements a day. This site is directly adjacent to the infamous Canford Bottom A31 (hamburger) intersection with vehicle and pedestrian access off the busy Middlehill Road, opposite long established residential properties and businesses. Aldi stated that it expects to attract additional customers from the A31 through-traffic in addition to residents from the local area.
To be clear, this is not an objection to Aldi in Wimborne/East Dorset but to the location of the Aldi site, adjacent to the already congested and hazardous Canford Bottom intersection with the proposed Toucan crossing increasing the stagnation of traffic. The Aldi store would draw in more vehicles to an already congested residential area, the resulting increase in traffic would increase risk of accidents, increase noise, pollution and disturbance to which there would be no low cost remedy.
The closing date for comments has passed and 370 individuals submitted objections to the development. We are now awaiting the DC Planning Committee meeting and the engagement of the aforementioned professional will enable residents to challenge this development in a logical and dynamic way.
Time is of the essence as the meeting is likely to be in December this year or possibly January next year.
Any unused funds at the end of this process will be donated to local charities - The Reef Youth and Community Centre and Wimborne Community Food Supply.
We really would appreciate any donation that will help us fight this controversial development.
