Since 2017 St Nicholas church has with the aid of a small dedicated team supported by the wider community saved a village church from possible closure. A church rich in both history and heritage. Firstly by replacing the chancel roof. Then during lockdown worked hard at getting a National Lottery Heritage Grant to replace the failing nave roof alongside much needed stonework repairs. We were successful.
Many activities and events happened as this work was carried out. Mysteries surrounding the churchyard and tower uncovered with much research. Information shared. At the same time with separate grants and donations we secured funding for a new servery and disabled toilet.
As the nave roof was being replaced the staves disintegrated and the old tiles became very unstable. Most of the ceiling in the north aisle was lost due to excessive damp over the years. The conservation builders informed us the church would have lost everything had it been left another year before repair. We have much to be thankful for.
The old font was carefully moved to create a new Baptistry area next to The Peace Window put in in 1919. An idea was born to have a new Stained Glass Window to complete the area. The design is unique to the church created by the Conservation Architect alongside a Master Glass man. There are three stained glass windows in the church. This will be the first in over 100 years. A bold plan for a small church.
This will be a celebration of all our hard work. Creating new heritage for the future. A reminder to all of the hard work and support to save the church.
Our small team really want this to happen. All money raised will go to creating the window and minor repairs to the mullions.
This is our Legacy to the future. We need help though. To see our dream of a unique stained glass window the design of which is created by someone who has helped our church along it's journey through the years with advice and guidance. To remind people in the future that the church was saved by the work of a dedicated group of people supported by the wider community.
