St Mary In The Marsh Project Fund

Who are we?

We are a small charity made up of local residents from the village of St Mary in the Marsh in the Heart of Romney Marsh, Kent.

Our aim is to replace the old derelict church hall with a new similar building for the village to provide a meeting venue where people can meet regardless of religious, cultural and social backgrounds.

Community impact

We live in a deprived rural part of Romney Marsh with poor transport, high unemployment and an ageing population that need a venue to offer social, economic and educational improvement to their lives.  The village has become quite isolated from its nearest neighbours who have these facilities, with no public transport to our nearest village hall.  The mobile library no longer serves the village but in the hall we could start our own book lending service, lunch club and mobile post office.  We have a number of clubs and societies who have expressed an interest in using the venue.  It is hoped we can also start a community gardening group with older members of the community passing on skills and knowledge to the younger generation.

Why are we crowdfunding?

We have been fundraising for 20 years now and are at the point of having obtained planning permission, clearing the site and preparing for stage 1 of our build, which is laying the foundations and groundworks.  Stage 2 will be the erection of the building.  For a small village of approximately 60 dwellings we have raised approximately £45,000 through community fundraising events such as coffee mornings and quiz nights.  This is a huge achievement for such a small community and now we need help from a wider audience to help us raise the remaining funds needed.

How we’ll spend the money raised

All money raised will be directly used to fund the building, fitting, landscaping and final finishing of the new village hall.
