Spotlights Community Youth Theatre

Spotlights began when a rather harassed mother with more children than sense realised that there were no affordable drama options for her kids. So she used her contacts in the Am Dram world to start one.

Spotlights is a registered charity based in Forfar. It’s ethos is that drama and musical theatre should be available for all kids, regardless of ability to pay or perform. As such, we do not audition members, instead, we support those who are less able and keep costs to a minimum, with a donation system rather than a weekly fee. Our members are diverse and not the usual ‘theatre kids’ you might find in other societies. They all have a love of drama and theatre and it is a joy to watch them grow in confidence and skill. We have a high percentage of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds and volunteers support them to take part in an equitable basis.

In addition to weekly classes, Spotlights produces regular shows which allow members to show off the skills they’ve learned. Members can participate off stage as well as on stage, with roles such as choreographer and stage crew. We produce our own original works, often written, or developed by our young members.

It currently costs us in the region of £30,000 a year to run our whole organisation
