Who we support.
Sport Newcastle want to help clubs, teams and athletes across the North East bounce back from Covid-19 and have some fun while raising valuable funds to support sport in our region.
We all know sport has the power to bring people together, to challenge us and have a positive impact on our lives. Now more than ever we realised the positive impact of sport when for many of us our hobbies, friends and teammates were taken away from us for a long period due to Covid-19.
Sport Newcastle Bounce Back Appeal Grants
Newly formed Newcastle Magpies Rugby League Club wanted to subsidise membership fees when they started back after the first lockdown. Their Sport Newcastle grant allowed them to get back to almost pre-Covid numbers shortly after re-opening.
Steve Beaty, head coach, said, “The grant will help us retain members, recruit from local schools and remain a club at the heart of the community.”
Covid gave Kenton Amateur Boxing Club a different problem. They couldn’t pass headguards and boxing gloves around for youngsters to share. A grant from Sport Newcastle allowed several sets of new gloves and headguards to be purchased so everyone had their own.
Craig Pape, manager and chief coach said, “The equipment is exactly what we needed to avoid youngsters having to share.”
During the last 18 months we’ve also continued to support individual athletes. At the annual awards evening last year, eleven Rising Stars each received a trophy and a bronze award grant of £250. Since then, fewer individual grants than normal have been issued. Some sport has been possible at times, allowing 19 bronze and silver (£500) grants to be awarded.
Prioritising clubs over individuals led to the reduction of athletes receiving our top level platinum grant (£1500 per year) from six to three. Including local sprinter, Joy Eze who won bronze in the 100m at the European under-20 championships with a 100m PB of 11.44 before later being part of the gold medal winning sprint relay team in Tallinn.
Sport Newcastle is a local charity run by volunteers. 99% of the money we raise is used to support local sport in the North East.
