SPINE is a Patient Advocate Group run by Spinal Cord Injured Patients for Spinal Cord Injured Patients in Yorkshire. The Charity is involved at the Spinal Injury Centre in Wakefield (we have an office) and has a presence in the Spinal Centre each day. We have a growing members hip of approximately 1200 Members and offer an holistic approach. We offer peer support of the many complex problems paralysed people encounter. We run many activity groups for members including a wheelchair rugby team (that eats money), an art group each week, along with craft and flower arranging groups. We also have a fishing group.
The Charity own an accessible vehicle that can be loaned to families so that people can get a day out (or longer if required). We also have designated volunteer drivers if the family do not which to drive the vehicle. A travel commode/shower chair is also available to Members to rent if they wish to go on holiday.
We give Grants to Members of up to £1500 to help them with any purchase of equipment required to help with their disability. They can also use the grant for continuing rehabilitation once they have been discharged from the spinal centre up to the maximum of the grant award approved.
The Charity also purchase larger, more expensive, equipment needed by the spinal centre to better manage the in-patient care.
