We are Shine: the UK's leading charity for anyone affected by spina bifida and hydrocephalus, which are complex disabilities of the brain and spine. Who we are and why our work matters
Based in Peterborough, Shine is the UK's leading charity for people affected by the disabilities spina bifida and hydrocephalus.
In case you haven't heard of them before, Spina bifida means ‘split spine’ and occurs when the spinal cord does not form correctly during pregnancy.
Hydrocephalus, which can present in conjunction with spina bifida or in isolation, means ‘water on the brain’ and occurs when fluid is trapped inside the head, causing damaging pressure inside the skull.
People who have these conditions may have some degree of lower body paralysis or complex learning disabilities. Spina bifida and hydrocephalus can also cause health complications such as renal infections, skin breakdown or problems with vision. No two people are the same, which is why specialist care and support are so important.
This is where Shine comes in. We provide expert information, one-to-one support and friendships for people living with these conditions and their families. Your support will help people stay healthier for longer and get the most out of life.
How you can make a difference
We are working with NHS Property Services to raise funds for Shine members, including 1300+ people across the East Midlands.
There are many ways you can fundraise for Shine, and raise awareness of our work. You might like to:
Go Yellow for Shine - by wearing yellow, painting a wall yellow, sowing sunflower seeds or selling lemonade to raise funds for our work!
Get Active - take a look at our cycling, running, hiking and challenge events and choose one that takes your fancy, or build a team.

The difference you'll make
As a small, specialist charity, we make every penny count.
£15 could cover the cost of a Shine Welcome Pack for a baby born in your area this year, which includes a special set of picture books to educate them about their conditions.
£62.50 could pay for one of our Support Workers to work with a local Shine member and provide health advice, financial guidance or support around coping at school or in work.
£220 could help us visit a local school and offer training for teachers, so that they understand how to support a child with spina bifida or hydrocephalus in their class
