The South Georgia Heritage Trust (SGHT) aims to work with all who wish to preserve South Georgia's natural and historical heritage for future generations – to redress past damage to its environment, to protect its wildlife now and in the future, and to preserve the human heritage of the island which so clearly shows the best and worst of humanity.

South Georgia Heritage Trust

SGHT was established in 2005 and exists to preserve South Georgia's rich cultural heritage and protect its precious, otherworldly natural environment and wildlife.

We've managed the South Georgia Museum for almost twenty years and delivered many successful projects on island, including the decade-long Habitat Restoration Project, which still to this day is the world's largest ever successful rodent eradication.

After raising over £10m with our US-affiliate charity Friends of South Georgia Island (FOSGI) to deliver the Habitat Restoration Project, we managed to rid the island of invasive rodents and save many native bird species from going extinct. In 2018, the island was declared rodent-free and since then we have continued to work with the Government of South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands (GSGSSI) as well as other stakeholders to deliver strict biosecurity procedures ensuring ecological recovery continues.

There's more to do to protect and preserve South Georgia's precious natural environment and rich cultural heritage. SGHT has a unique landmark project underway that you can support here on Crowdfunder to have a real impact on the future of South Georgia, help its wildlife continue to recover, and inspire people around the world with the island as a modern rarity - an ecosystem in recovery and beacon of hope for conservation activities worldwide.

South Georgia is truly the most powerful example of ecological restoration and our new landmark project will illuminate this to inspire the world that there's still hope for our planet and that nature heals when given the chance.
