A festival of sound in response to St Leonards, drawing from the local ecology, community and mythology.
by James Wilkie in Saint Leonards-on-sea, East Sussex, United Kingdom
Sono-Electro Festival will take over ELECTRO STUDIOS PROJECT SPACE Artist-run Galleries in St Leonards on Sea, between 8th-20th August to grow sound responses to the local ecology.
Why a sound festival?
“Although many of us think of ourselves as thinking creatures that feel, biologically we are feeling creatures that think.” - Jill Bolte Taylor
Sound is a pressure-based sense, and we feel pressure - the act of listening and hearing is closer to feeling than seeing. Sound provides a sense of listening in for what isn’t seen,: only felt and heard.
The festival has invited a diverse range of artists to respond to the local ecology, community, and mythology of St Leonards and Hastings to produce works as diverse as AV shows, dance performances, and live modular sets using field recordings of the local ecology such as Combe Valley and Hastings Country Park.
How will the money be used?
The funds will be used to contribute towards fair pay the artists' and organiser’s expenses and time, and to guarantee that the necessary logistics (speakers, cabling, A/V) equipment is properly hired and set up by professionals. Sono-Electro also hopes to invest in proper documentation of the festival to drive better funding for the next annual run.
