Smell The Roses

RCN 1183469, Whitley Bay

Smell the Roses offers ReTreat days to mums/female carers who have children (of any age) with additional needs. We are based in Whitley Bay, but welcome people from the surrounding areas too. We want our attendees to remember what it's like to be treated for the day and have someone else look after them. We hope to expand to offering something similar to dads and male carers too.

Smell the Roses is a unique charity based in North Tyneside.  The charity was founded in April 2018 and we began delivering our monthly face-to-face ReTreat days for mums/female carers who have children with additional needs in January 2019.  The participants pay a small amount to attend (we find charging a small fee ensures the mums commit to the day). Our Unique Selling Point is that we bring together mums/female carers with other organisations, volunteers and businesses to provide a safe space where the mums/carers can care for themselves. Whilst talking to other support charities around the country the mums are crying out for this service elsewhere too.  Our vision is to expand the charity throughout the UK and beyond.

The aims of Smell the Roses are to help alleviate loneliness, enable the mums/female carers to cope with the ever increasing demands and challenges of parenting a child with additional needs. We also aim to help reduce the mums/female carers’ stress levels and improve their mood.  Our tagline is Rest, Recharge, Restore.  Through the activities and their much needed “me time”, they get a chance to re-energise, because when mum’s mental and physical health are in a better place, the whole family copes better.  The mums in attendance are asked to fill in an impact form at the start and end of each ReTreat day. 100% of the mums asked told us their stress levels had improved.  Also 100% of the mums asked told us that their feelings of isolation had reduced.
