Het Verhaal
Suriname is een land met iets meer dan een half miljoen inwoners, maar de invloed op het wereldvoetbal is vele malen groter dan de omvang doet vermoeden. De wortels van deze impact gaan terug naar de jaren 50 en 60, toen vijf pionierende spelers – Erwin Sparendam, Humphrey Mijnals, Frank Mijnals, Michel Kruin en Charley Marbach – Suriname verlieten voor Nederland en de loop van het Nederlandse voetbal voorgoed veranderden. Ze werden informeel bekend als ‘De Vijfklaver’, een verwijzing naar zowel hun zeldzaamheid als hun genialiteit. Hun succes effende de weg voor generaties spelers van Surinaamse afkomst, van wie velen iconen van het spel zouden worden.
Ondanks deze onmiskenbare bijdrage is Suriname zelf grotendeels afwezig gebleven op het internationale voetbalpodium. Decennialang verhinderden beperkende nationaliteitswetten dat diaspora-spelers het land konden vertegenwoordigen, en een gebrek aan infrastructuur zorgde ervoor dat jong talent vaak verloren ging voordat het kon floreren. Maar dat begint nu te veranderen. Met de introductie van een nieuwe Major League in 2024 en de implementatie van een 12-jarig nationaal voetbalontwikkelingsplan ondergaat Suriname een voetbaltransformatie.
Deze documentaireserie zal die reis vastleggen: van de historische invloed van het land op het wereldvoetbal tot de huidige inspanningen om een competitieve voetbaltoekomst op te bouwen. Door middel van intieme interviews, rijk archiefmateriaal en meeslepende verhalen op locatie zullen we het verleden, het heden en de toekomst van het Surinaamse voetbal verkennen en een cruciaal moment in de sportgeschiedenis van het land vastleggen.
Waarom Deze Film Belangrijk Is
Voetbal is meer dan een spel – het is een weerspiegeling van geschiedenis, cultuur en identiteit. Het verhaal van het Surinaamse voetbal is ook het verhaal van migratie, koloniale erfenissen en nationale trots. Terwijl Surinaamse spelers het Nederlandse voetbal op het wereldtoneel naar een hoger niveau hebben getild, heeft Suriname zelf moeite gehad om erkenning te krijgen in de sport. Deze documentaire zal dat paradox belichten en de complexe relatie tussen Suriname en Nederland door de lens van voetbal onderzoeken.
Nu Suriname aan een nieuw tijdperk begint, biedt deze film een ongekende kijk op de inspanningen om het nationale voetbal nieuw leven in te blazen. Het succes van landen als IJsland – dat de verwachtingen trotseerde en de eindfase van grote toernooien bereikte – bewijst dat kleinere landen met de juiste investeringen en visie kunnen concurreren met de wereldtop. Suriname volgt een vergelijkbaar pad, maar met het unieke voordeel van een enorme diaspora-talentpool, zowel op het veld als in de technische staf.
Deze documentaire legt de uitdagingen vast die gepaard gaan met structurele hervormingen in een systeem dat de potentie heeft om lokaal talent te ontwikkelen dat op het hoogste niveau kan concurreren. Via de stemmen van legendarische spelers, opkomende sterren en sleutelfiguren in de ontwikkeling van het Surinaamse voetbal zullen we de obstakels blootleggen die het land hebben tegengehouden en de ambities die het vooruit stuwen. Dit is meer dan een voetbalverhaal – het is een verhaal van veerkracht, kansen en een natie die haar rechtmatige plaats op het wereldtoneel opeist.
Hoe Je Dit Project Kunt Steunen
Om dit verhaal recht te doen, hebben we financiering nodig om de kosten van preproductie, productie, archieflicenties en postproductie te dekken. We hebben contact met filmmakers in zowel Suriname als Nederland, met wie we hopen samen te werken zodra het project in productie gaat. Financiering uit deze campagne zal hun kosten dekken, inclusief de kosten voor de producent om het eerste onderzoeksstadium voort te zetten, wat onder meer een reis naar Suriname omvat.
Het geld zal ook worden gebruikt om belangrijke filmlocaties te beveiligen en om, waar nodig, bijdragers te vergoeden. We hopen aanvullende financiering te verkrijgen via documentairefondsen, die de verdere productiekosten en het inhuren van een editor zullen dekken om het verhaal samen te brengen. Ook distributie is een aandachtspunt, maar gezien de tijdgevoeligheid van dit verhaal willen we zo snel mogelijk van start gaan.
Dit is een moment van verandering voor het Surinaamse voetbal en door dit project te steunen, help je een historisch keerpunt vast te leggen. Waarom Nu?
Er is nooit een beter moment geweest om dit verhaal te vertellen. Nu het nationale team van Suriname een beroep kan doen op spelers uit de diaspora en de binnenlandse competitie een transformatie ondergaat, kan het land de komende tien jaar uitgroeien tot een serieuze voetbalmacht.
Met de uitbreiding van het WK 2026 en extra kwalificatieplaatsen heeft Suriname een grotere kans dan ooit om zich te kwalificeren voor het grootste voetbaltoernooi ter wereld. Veel jonge spelers in Suriname dromen nog steeds van een carrière in het buitenland, maar zal het succes van het nationale team hun perspectief veranderen?
Met Wie Hebben We Overlegd?
Om ervoor te zorgen dat deze documentaire een authentieke en diepgaande kijk biedt op het Surinaamse voetbal, hebben we contact gehad met belangrijke figuren die direct betrokken zijn bij de voetbalontwikkeling in het land.
We hebben gesproken met de Business Developer van het Surinaamse nationale team, die ons inzicht heeft gegeven in de strategische plannen die momenteel worden uitgevoerd. Dit omvat de structurele hervormingen in het nationale voetbalsysteem, de oprichting van de nieuwe Surinaamse Major League in 2024, de ontwikkeling van academies in het hele land en de voortdurende inspanningen om diaspora-spelers te integreren in het nationale team. Deze inzichten zijn cruciaal geweest bij het vormgeven van het narratief van onze documentaire.
Daarnaast voeren we actieve gesprekken met de Surinaamse Voetbalbond (SVB) om te bepalen welke sleutelfiguren in de film zullen verschijnen en ons op deze reis zullen begeleiden. We streven ernaar om directe perspectieven te laten zien van degenen die de toekomst van het Surinaamse voetbal vormgeven: van nationale teamofficials en jeugdtrainers tot huidige en voormalige spelers met ervaring in de evolutie van de sport in het land.
We hebben ook de steun gekregen van More Than Goals, een in Amsterdam gevestigd voetbalagentschap dat diep geworteld is in het Nederlands-Surinaamse voetbalsysteem. Hun uitgebreide netwerk omvat voormalige en huidige spelers, coaches en sleutelfiguren in zowel Surinaams als Europees voetbal. Ze staan bekend om hun sportverhalen en het verbinden van spelers met hun roots, waardoor ze de perfecte partners zijn voor dit project.
Door deze samenwerkingen zorgen we ervoor dat deze documentaire geen buitenstaandersblik biedt op het Surinaamse voetbal, maar een authentiek en goed onderbouwd verslag is, verteld met de begeleiding van degenen die het spel hebben geleefd, gespeeld en gevormd.

The Story
Suriname is a country of just over half a million people, but its influence on global football far exceeds its size. The roots of this impact stretch back to the 1950s and 60s, when five pioneering players - Erwin Sparendam, Humphrey Mijnals, Frank Mijnals, Michel Kruin, and Charley Marbach left Suriname for the Netherlands and changed the course of Dutch football forever. They became informally known as ‘The Five-Leaf Clover’, a reference to both their rarity and their brilliance. Their success paved the way for generations of Surinamese-descended players, many of whom would go on to become icons of the game.
Despite this undeniable contribution, Suriname itself has remained largely absent from the international football stage. For decades, restrictive nationality laws prevented diaspora players from representing the country, and a lack of infrastructure meant that young talent was often lost before it could flourish. But that is now beginning to change. With the introduction of a new Major League in 2024 and the implementation of a 12-year national football development plan, Suriname is undergoing a footballing transformation.
This documentary series will chronicle that journey, from the nation’s historical impact on global football to its current efforts to build a competitive footballing future. Through intimate interviews, rich archival footage, and on-the-ground storytelling, we will explore the past, present, and future of Surinamese football, capturing a pivotal moment in the country’s sporting history.
Why This Film Matters
Football is more than a game—it is a reflection of history, culture, and identity. The story of Surinamese football is also the story of migration, colonial legacies, and national pride. While Surinamese players have helped elevate Dutch football on the world stage, Suriname itself has struggled to gain recognition in the sport. This documentary will shine a light on that paradox, exploring the complex relationship between Suriname and the Netherlands through the lens of football.
As Suriname embarks on a new era, this film will offer an unprecedented look at the country’s efforts to revitalise its domestic game. The success of nations like Iceland - who defied the odds to reach the latter stages of major tournaments - has proven that with the right investment and vision, smaller countries can compete with football’s elite. Suriname is following a similar path but with the unique advantage of a vast diaspora talent pool, both on the pitch and within coaching staff. This documentary will capture the trials and challenges of implementing structural changes to a system with the potential to develop homegrown talent capable of competing at the highest level.
Through the voices of legendary players, emerging stars, and key figures in Surinamese football development, we will uncover the obstacles that have held the nation back and the ambitions that are driving it forward. This is more than just a football story—it is a story of resilience, opportunity, and a nation’s quest to claim its rightful place on the world stage.
How You Can Support the Project
To do justice to this story, we need funding to cover pre-production and production costs, archival licensing, and post-production work. We are in touch with filmmakers in both Suriname and Holland who we are hoping to work with once the project goes into production. Funding from this campaign will cover their costs, including the producer's cost to continue the first phase of research which will include travelling to Suriname as soon as possible. The money would also be used to secure key filming locations, and expense contributors where necessary. We are hoping to secure further funding through documentary grants etc. which will cover continued production costs, and hiring an editor to bring the story together. We’ll also need to think about distribution, but at this stage, given the time-sensitivity of the story, we want to get started very soon.

There has never been a better time to tell this story. With Suriname’s national team now able to call on players from its diaspora and the country’s domestic league undergoing a transformation, the next decade could see Suriname emerge as a genuine footballing force. With the 2026 World Cup expanding and offering more qualification spots, Suriname has a greater chance than ever to compete on football’s biggest stage. With many young players in Suriname still keen to play abroad, will the national team's success change their perspective?
Who have we consulted?
To ensure this documentary captures the most authentic and insightful perspective on Surinamese football, we have consulted key figures directly involved in the country’s football development.
We have been in contact with the Business Developer working with the Surinamese national team, who has provided us with an overview of the strategic plans currently underway. These include the structural reforms in Suriname’s domestic football system, the establishment of the new Surinamese Major League in 2024 and academies across the country, and the ongoing efforts to integrate players from the diaspora into the national team. This insight has been crucial in shaping the narrative of our documentary.
Additionally, we are in active discussions with the Surinamese Football Association (SVB) to determine key contributors who will feature in the film and help lead us on this journey. Our aim is to include first-hand perspectives from those shaping Suriname’s football future, from national team officials and youth academy coaches to current and former players who have had experience with the evolution of the game in the country.
We have also consulted with and gained the support of More Than Goals, an Amsterdam-based football agency which is deeply embedded in the Dutch-Surinamese football ecosystem and their extensive network includes former and current players, coaches, and key decision-makers in Surinamese and European football. They’re also known for sports storytelling, uncovering untold football stories and connecting players with their roots, making them the perfect partners for this project and we look forward to collaborating with them further.
Through these consultations, we have ensured that this documentary is not just an outsider’s perspective on Surinamese football but an authentic and deeply researched account, told with the guidance of those who have lived, played, and shaped the game.
