SITES: Exploring the Unknown with Science
Uncovering the Truth Behind Wildlife Mysteries
Hi, I’m Luke — a zoologist, storyteller, and lover of animal mysteries. My fascination with wildlife started young, inspired by David Attenborough documentaries, and led me to study zoology and ethology (the science of animal behaviour). But my passion has always gone beyond traditional research.
That’s why we're launching SITES (Scientific Investigation of Theoretically Extant* Species)—a research and multimedia project dedicated to scientifically investigating wildlife mysteries.
*(The word "extant" - the opposite of "extinct" - means currently living).
Why SITES?
The natural world is full of unanswered questions. Some species once thought extinct may still survive. Others appear in places where they shouldn’t exist. Some creatures remain unconfirmed but have enough scientific plausibility to deserve serious investigation.
While cryptozoology often leans on folklore, SITES takes a scientific, evidence-based approach — applying real research methods to explore cases that could lead to meaningful discoveries.
What We’ll Investigate
We focus on species with biological plausibility, including:
- Cryptid species with zoological roots – e.g., Bigfoot (possibly an undiscovered primate)
- Extinct but reportedly sighted species – e.g., the thylacine (Tasmanian tiger)
- Animals appearing in unexpected places – e.g., Beast of Exmoor

However, we won’t be investigating folkloric creatures with no biological basis (e.g., Mothman). Instead, we focus on cases where scientific research and fieldwork can produce real results.
How We’ll Investigate
SITES will combine rigorous research with compelling storytelling, making science engaging and accessible.
- Field Investigations – Using camera traps, drones, and interviews with experts and witnesses to gather data.
- Scientific Testing – Conducting DNA analysis and lab tests to verify potential evidence.
How We'll Present our Investigations
- Documentaries – Bringing discoveries to life through high-quality video productions.
- Hand-Drawn Animations – Illustrating witness accounts and explaining complex concepts.
- Online database - Comprising of written-up reports in accessible language, photo evidence, lab results, etc.
Building on Experience
I’ve already begun developing this approach through my YouTube channel, sensibly simian, where I’ve created educational videos on animal behaviour, using hand-drawn animations to make science engaging

Now, with SITES, I want to expand this further—integrating field research, interviews, and self-filmed expeditions to create in-depth wildlife investigations.
Stylistic Approach for Documentaries
Filming & Editing Style
We’ll take inspiration from established YouTube channels like Channel 5 with Andrew Callaghan and Watcher’s 'Ghost Files' to craft a unique, immersive experience.
Channel 5 with Andrew Callaghan’s raw, unfiltered interviews reveal the true personalities of its subjects, and we aim to bring that same authenticity to witness accounts of animal encounters.
Examples of the filming style from 'Channel 5 with Andrew Callaghan'.
Watcher’s 'Ghost Files' series follows a structured, methodical investigative format, using a consistent set of tools to analyse claims. We’ll apply a similar scientific approach—utilising camera traps, DNA analysis, and fieldwork to examine wildlife mysteries.
Examples from 'Watcher' displaying the use of equipment during investigations.
Why This Matters for Conservation
SITES isn’t just about solving mysteries—it’s about raising awareness for conservation. If a species once thought extinct is rediscovered, it could have huge implications for biodiversity and habitat protection.
By investigating these cases, SITES will:
- Highlight overlooked species & ecosystems
- Contribute valuable research to wildlife conservation
- Partner with conservation groups to protect habitats
- Donating to charities
Our work will not only explore what’s out there but also help protect the natural world for future generations.
How You Can Help
To make this project a reality, we need your support! Your contributions will fund:
Field Research & Equipment
- Field Research: Covers travel, permits, and expert consultations.
- Equipment Acquisition: For purchasing and maintaining essential gear such as camera traps, drones, and additional field tools (e.g., camera traps, drones, and other field gear).
High-Quality Documentary Production
- This funds the filming, editing, and hiring of animators to create engaging, research-driven episodes.
Lab Testing & DNA Analysis
- Covers scientific testing to verify potential evidence.
Open-Access Research
- Supports the development and maintenance of the S.I.T.E.S. website, including compiling reports and hosting our curated database.
