Providing life-changing support for those affected by natural disasters in Sindhupalchok

Project by Involve Nepal

We're still collecting donations

On the 26th January 2024 we'd raised £2,320 with 33 supporters in 69 days. But as every pound matters, we're continuing to collect donations from supporters.

What are the aims of the project, why is it needed?

1) To rebuild and relocate disaster prone villages to safer areas.

People of several settlements in Sindhupalchok, a hill district of Bagmati Province, are living in fear of natural disasters. Sindhupalchok has been struck by a series of earthquakes, floods and landslides over the past decade. During some of the worst floods the district has seen, 19 people went missing while a total of 145 people were killed and 127 families displaced.

Furthermore, the earthquake of 2015 has made the district’s topography more vulnerable to landslides, and the recent heavier than usual rainfall during the monsoon seasons further increases risk.

2) To provide disaster risk reduction (DRR) training

Lying in one of the most disaster-prone regions of Nepal, the upskilling of communities in how to respond to disasters is essential to further increase preparedness and resilience.

About the project:

We have already identified 7 families, which have had homes damaged and continue living in high risk areas. Each house costs between £6,500 - £11,000 to build. The more money we raise, the more families we can help. On completion of the construction works, our partner organisation will deliver the DRR training to the communities that we’ve helped.
