I met Francis (also known as Mandela in his village) whilst out running one morning in Mombasa, Kenya. He volunteers his time throughout the week to support others with their mental and physical health problems, by leading the 'Mombasa Walk Movement'. He told me about the challenges, adults like himself, have finding work in and around Mombasa.
So he explained how he could set up his own small sustainable chicken farm in his local community. However, he does not have any capital to start the community project, so I said I would do what I could to support him and hopefully others like him in the future.
To purchase the chicken feeders, chickens, vaccines, materials to build a pen costs approximately £300. Francis has sent me all the costings and explained how he can make is sustainable once he has the resources to get started.
We hope the model could be used to help others in the future start up their own business and enable them to live a happy and financially independent life.
The funding will all go directly to the start up of the community project in the village of Majaoni, Mombasa.
We would like the funds to go towards sponsoring a chicken that will provide cost effective eggs for the local community.
Why Francis? Anyone who gives up their time to volunteer and support others above their own needs demonstrates their character and trustworthiness. I hope that this project will be just the beginning for Francis and others in his local community.
