Sight loss

Sight is the sense we fear losing the most. The prospect of not being able to see the faces of loved ones, struggling with everyday tasks around the home or wondering how to cope at work is frightening, yet is faced by the 250 people who begin to lose their sight every day in the UK.

Sight Support Derbyshire

Sight Support Derbyshire (registered charity name Derbyshire Association of the Blind Ltd) has been supporting visually impaired adults and children across Derby and Derbyshire for over 100 years and with your help will continue to do so for many years to come.

Your generosity can:

  • offer the gift of time to a grandad who has just been told by his Consultant that he is losing his sight and that nothing more can be done to save it. Our trained Eye Clinic Liaison Officers, together with our Hospital Volunteers, take the time to listen to people at local Hospital Eye Clinics who may have been given a diagnosis in stark medical terms. We offer practical advice as well as emotional support

  • give the gift of independence to a visually impaired mum who has been reliant on her daughter to take her anywhere outside of the home by providing white cane training through our Rehabilitation team. Our rehabilitation staff help people to gain or regain their independence both within the home, for example teaching safe cooking techniques, as well as getting out in the community

  • give the gift of self esteem to a visually impaired former member of the armed forces who has lost all confidence along with his sight loss. Our team can provide training and small items of equipment such as liquid level indicators which enable people to make themselves a hot drink safely. This can be a first step to restoring confidence and self esteem

  • offer the gift of fun, friendship and self belief to a withdrawn 8 year old with sight loss. Through our Children and Young People's activities we provide a programme of exciting, challenging and fun activities such as trampolining, kayaking, tobogganing, museum touch tours, baking, theatre trips and more to help local children affected by sight loss to flourish

  • give the gift of companionship to a lonely widower struggling with isolation and sight loss. Our programme of trips and activities for visually impaired older people enable them to form friendships, offer and receive mutual support, and get out of the house to visit garden centres, cafe's, the theatre or go for a short walk together, all with the support of our staff and volunteers

With your support we can continue to provide practical and emotional advice and support to local adults and children facing the everyday challenges of living with sight loss. Thank you.
