A majority of Wetherspoons workers are currently paid Statutory Sick Pay (SSP). SSP is only £94.25 per week and in order to qualify employees must have been off work sick for 4 or more days in a row and earn an average of at least £118 per week. However, managers are paid Company Sick Pay (CSP), with shift managers and kitchen managers receiving 5 days at full pay and Pub Managers and “Wethercentre” employees receiving 10 days at full pay.
All Wetherspoons employees, regardless of earning or length of service, should be entitled to the same Company Sick Pay policies that Pub Managers receive from day one. No employee is more or less deserving of sick pay than another. COVID-19 We are demanding that all Wetherspoons employees are paid the same Company Sick Pay. This is especially important now because of the coronavirus epidemic. Workers should not have to choose between making rent and public safety. If pubs are to shut as a result of the coronavirus crisis, such as understaffing or a result of governmental health guidelines, employees should receive their full pay.
Workers who are are self isolating should receive full pay for that time as well.
What do we mean by full pay?
Currently, if pubs shut workers will only receive their guaranteed minimum hours, which is significantly less than workers’ actual pay. If workers are in self isolation they are essentially on SSP, with a few changes to the policy.
This is an issue of public safety Many other workers, esp in retail and hospitality are faced with this same issues.
