I have been a teacher both privately and through the state and home education sector for 25 years. I am a pianist and singer with a music degree from Kings College/Royal Acadmy of Music. The world has changed, yet the way we evaluate and conduct music exams has not been progressive. It has hindered pupils love of music and also continues to cause much stress for teachers. Music shouldn’t be boxed in a convenient non thinking marking system. It isn’t fit for purpose and post Covid this is even more exposed as a flawed system. Music is about much more than a pass or fail. The exam board we create will celebrate diversity and will NOT fail any pupil but through marking will both support teachers and encouraging ALL diversity. An exam board for a new era, with no one failed or left behind. Celebrating excellent music making and encouraging helpful advice where needed. Marking children on their ability to play by ear, or read music - all music is equal
