On the 14th April 2023 we'd raised £3,066 with 69 supporters in 38 days. But as every pound matters, we're continuing to collect donations from supporters.
Continue the group (hopefully for many years), hire the room and storage, keep resources stocked up, get resources that meet the individual needs of children as they arise, have the opportunity to expand the group to weekly rather than fortnightly, and add additional groups for early years or 8 years plus.
See Me: A play space for neurodivergent children and families.
We are beginning a fortnightly play space for neurodivergent children from ages 4-8 and their families, in Thanet. The group will be held once a fortnight (on the second and forth Monday of the month) at 3.30-5pm @ St.James’ Church, Westbrook, Margate
Why do we need this group?
I have struggled to find many safe feeling spaces that my son, who is autistic, can play truly freely in the ways that he chooses. He is an energetic sensory seeker and is curious about his environment.
The individual ways that our neurodivergent children play is beautiful and nothing about it needs to change - play is play! We have felt in need of a space that we can relax and feel accepted in, where children can play freely, and where we can feel connected to other neurodivergent families. We hope by creating this space we can fulfil this need for other families in our community.
Who is the group for?
“Neurodiversity is the diversity of human minds, the infinite variation in neurocognitive functioning within our species.”
www.neuroqueer.com/neurodiversity-terms-and-definitions
Some examples of this are, but not limited to: autism, ADHD, sensory processing differences, dyslexia, dyspraxia…
This will be a place where our neurodivergent children’s way of playing and existing will be honoured and celebrated. It will also be a place where families can learn from and support each other, with tea and cake, and where specialist neurodivergent advocates, like Occupational Therapists and Autism Advocates, will come to offer additional specialised support. This will be a Neurodiversity Affirming place.
Diagnosed, self-diagnosed and pre-diagnosis welcome.
School going and home-educated children welcome.
What is the money we are raising for?
We are hoping to raise enough money to buy specialist sensory equipment and play resources to offer a fun and creative play space which will include musical instruments, art materials, sensory play items, climbing equipment, books, toys etc. We would really like to get resources that meet the individual needs and interests of the children who attend, so that they feel really welcome and included. We also hope to raise enough to cover the cost of the space for the first year, so that we can make this group affordable to those with low incomes.
The space:
The church has a great free flow hall with an indoor area and double doors onto a secure garden, as well as a car park just next to the entrance, and a kitchen.
Who am I?
I am a qualified art psychotherapist and have specialised in working with children, and SEN children, and their families in schools and in the community. My son is 5 years old and is autistic, he is currently home educated.
