To support and benefit the mental health and well being of the elderly

by Befriender to the elderly in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom

I am a volunteer befriender to the elderly. This involves a range of things depending on the persons mobility and ability - I can be sitting with them for chat and a cup of tea, taking them out for a bit of shopping, a walk, trip to the park or local woodlands, for a bit of fresh air, to the local community centre, bingo, to my allotment to sit and relax or do a little gardening. I also have a therapy dog called Diva who loves to spend time with my elderly friends, entertaining and receiving and giving cuddles. Anything to put a smile on their faces.

After my own battle with loneliness and depression, I eventually found a resolve for this in an outdoor environment, and doing outdoor activities.  My elderly friends might not be fit or mobile enough to paddle board, walk a hill, or fancy a cold water dip, but my aim and methodology is to 'get them out the house' by encouraging and doing everything in my power to make this possible for them.

This is why I need help. I have been blessed and presented with an opportunity to purchase a small cabin in the woods on the outskirts of my local area with the potential to make it into a wee safe space place, a relaxing hub to take my elderly friends and Diva the dog. With its surrounding woodland trees and wildlife and small area of land attached, with your help there is scope to make a tranquil haven with a little garden and allotment for my elderly friends to enjoy and benefit from both mentally and physically. For the not so nice days and winter there is a wood burning stove, small kitchen to make a cuppa, and bathroom facilities for a cosy, inviting and safe space for them to enjoy and meet others for a chat and a laugh. I am putting up half the cost of the cabin from my own personal funds but need help from like minded others who share my passion to care, look after and provide support to our elderly generation, who feel they have been forgotten about.

Over the last few years many vital services for the elderly and others, have been cut. Including, access to Nhs, mental health services, carers services, transport, social community services.  Most of my elderly friends live in a flat, with no garden area, get no visitors, have no family and are struggling with the modern world and the loneliness and isolation. Having this wee place for them all to enjoy would be a miracle.  🙏
