This group was created in 2024 to attempt to secure the future of Metrolink's former support vehicle No. 1027 and its wagon No. 1028.
1027 was built by RFS Industries in Kilnhurst in 1991 for the purpose of maintaining the new network and supporting its fleet of T-68 trams. It has been used many times across the network for rescuing trams that have broken down and for repairing tracks.
After 31 years in service, having seen two different generations of trams and four network expansions, 1027 was officially retired from the Metrolink fleet in early 2023 for disposal after being replaced by battery-powered shunters and a Unimog road-rail vehicle.
The transmission of the vehicle is also believed to be reaching the end of its life, which will require repair or replacement if it is to be used again.
According to Metrolink, a sealed bid auction will take place to sell 1027 at an undecided time. Because of this, we are trying to raise funds to participate in this auction and hopefully ensure 1027 survives as a piece of Light Rail history, as well as looking for a new home to keep it in.
