My name is Kumar Muniandy, a queer Malaysian Indian theatermaker based between Berlin and London and a 2025 recipient of the Keep It Fringe Fund, an award supporting bold and under-represented voices at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
After 15 years of being typecast in roles like terrorists and yogis, I began writing Second Class Queer to finally tell stories that reflected my truth, raw, complex, and unfiltered. This solo play follows Krishna, a queer Malaysian man navigating a chaotic Berlin speed-dating night, where five strangers unknowingly unearth his grief, culture, and unresolved past.
It’s personal, political, and driven by urgency. The play speaks to queer communities living under the shadow of colonial-era anti-LGBT laws, particularly in Malaysia, and is dedicated to _____________, an 18-year-old Malaysian teen who died after a suspected homophobic and bullying attack.
Thanks to £2,000 from the Keep It Fringe Fund, I’ve already secured my slot at C Venues for a 7-show run from 11th till 17th August 2025. Now, I’m seeking £3,000 to cover the remaining essentials: travel, food, accommodation, and any last minute additional costs towards the production so I can be present, nourished, and focused during this career-defining moment.
The target is set slightly higher at £3100, to account for the crowdfund platform transaction fees, so that after those are deducted, the full £3,000 can still go directly toward making this show happen.
Your support means more than money; it’s a vote for visibility, truth, and the kind of theatre that makes space for voices still fighting to be heard.
Thank you for your time and energy.
With gratitude,
Kumar
