Rejuvenate and re-purpose an existing woodland space with the intention to use the area for educational and wellbeing activities.

by Mount Primary School in Wallasey, Merseyside, United Kingdom

What is the problem?

The woodland area in our school has not been used for some time and has become overgrown. Many of the structures such as a wooden platform and natural seating areas have been damaged by weathering and are not safe to use. This area is bursting with potential and could benefit the children in so many different ways both in terms of education and wellbeing. Unfortunately, in it's current state, it is not being used in a meaningful way.

What are our aims?

To rejuvenate and re-purpose an existing woodland recreational space with the intention to use the area for educational and wellbeing activities.

Some ideas for what the woodland area could include

A winding willow tunnel linking EYFS to the woodland area. This will provide an enchanting pathway to the woodland area. The willow structure can have windows so children can peep through so the tunnel also acts as a hide to view nature. Having this tunnel access also has the dual purpose of protecting the foxes. If children use the tunnel, they won’t disturb the foxes and wildlife in fox den patch. Depending on the amount of light, thornless blackberry plants can be grown along the willow tunnel so that in late summer the blackberries can be picked by the children and also shared with the birds.

A willow talking circle- containing mini willow wigwams  arranged in a circle facing each other to promote conversation. Single wigwam structures can also give children a safe space to relax in. This can have a positive impact on their wellbeing.

The woodland area would also benefit from a pond. This will provide access to water for insects and animals. The children can also learn about ecosystems and can use it as a place to look for mini beasts. A running water feature could also set a soothing ambience to promote wellbeing.

A nature tapestry can be made between two trees. This is a vertical tapestry frame made of fallen branches and twigs with a web centre made with hessian twine. Children that use the woodland area can contribute by weaving a feather, flower, seed head, twig that they found during their visit in the area. Overtime, it creates a nature tapestry for all to enjoy.

A country park sign post can be placed at the entrance of the woodland area (at a child friendly height) to point to the direction of the different features of the woodland and distance to them. This will enhance the children’s spatial awareness and ensure the different woodland features get known and are utilised.

A second sign post could show the four/eight compass points. This can help create orienteering activities. It can also help in understanding why moss may grow one side of a tree or why bird boxes are positioned to face a particular direction. Also, understanding the direction the wind is blowing from and how its direction can affect if it feels cold, warm or hot.

Long benches under the trees provide seating but also allow children space to lie on the bench to look directly into the tree canopy. Picnic tables with benches around the woodland area will also allow children to lie back and look up to observe the features in of the trees and spot birds and squirrels. The tables can also be utilised as work surfaces and places to have a picnic.
