 New stretch target

HOW WILL THE £60k DONATIONS BE SPENT?

Our small team is working hard and executing a plan to secure longer-term, sustainable income. However, this takes time! Writing applications can be incredibly time-consuming and involve lengthy waiting times to receive funding decisions. Even when closed to the public, the gallery incurs mandatory daily expenses such as insurance, rent, standing energy charges, and maintenance costs).

All money donated to the £60k Crowdfunder target will be used to cover these overheads allowing us to hold onto the venue until the end of the year (December 2023) while we try and secure its future. Your donations have given us the space and time to have a fighting chance. Without your support, we would have been forced to vacate the premises much sooner, and all hope would have been lost for a positive outcome.

WHAT IS A 'STRETCH TARGET'?

£60k was the minimum (essential) amount needed to secure the venue until December whilst pursuing longer-term funding. Any extra money donated above the £60k mark will be used to cover the Crowdfunder platform fees and some staff wages between October and December. This 'stretch target' is a 'desirable' additional amount intended to cover other costs not included in the original target.

NEXT STEPS

Side Gallery must remain closed to the public while the remaining team implement a broader strategy to pursue longer-term, sustainable funding. If we are successful, we will look to re-open to the public by Autumn 2024. It is a big task for a small team, but we will give it our best shot because if this campaign proves anything, it is how much Side Gallery means to many people.

We will keep you updated on our progress and continue to provide great photographic content on our social media platforms.

For over 45 years, Side has been a dedicated home to documentary film and photography. Side's mission is to be an agent for change through the commission, exhibition, and preservation of world-class visual stories that highlight social concerns and celebrate diverse lives & landscapes across the North East, UK, and the globe.

Now more than ever, we must protect this vital and freely accessible cultural resource so it can continue to provide an essential public platform for these important stories.

Our small team are doing everything possible to secure additional funding so that we can eventually re-open to the public. However, our future is uncertain, and we now face the possibility of permanent closure.

With the support of donors, we can continue working towards re-opening in September 2024 - but we can't do it without you. Please help us #SaveSide!
