This is just one of a number of developments that seem intended to reduce the centre of Edinburgh to a tourist non-place, with perhaps a few punters in the many hotels that seem so central to this policy,attending the odd conference. Each one has been offensive, but this one, on land supposedly once to be given over to library expansion, is morally bankrupt, as appose to 'merely' visually controversial.

I whole heartedly agree with the above comments. I live in the centre of Edinburgh and despair at the recent decisions made by this council. Visitors' needs are definitely put before those of us who reside here . Shops and businesses may benefit but we certainly do not. They talk of the money that comes into Edinburgh from tourism but what do the people living here see of it? They seem to ride roughshod over any objections to their 'grand designs' and wouldn't it be good to win this one!
The Cowgate needs more housing for local residents - Edinburgh city centre is not a museum piece. Central Library was given to the city for its people to enjoy and benefit from and it is supposed to be full of light and open to expansion. The city and its libraries are surely for the Edinburgh people whose interests and needs come before the 'need' for yet another hotel. If Edinburgh becomes just a collection of hotels and fewer and fewer ordinary people live there then it will be little more than a theme park.
