Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS)

RCN SC009206, Oban

SAMS is a global leader in marine science; pioneering groundbreaking technologies, innovating pathways to tackle climate change, & through new knowledge, supporting a sustainable future for the ocean.

SAMS' vision is for a healthy and sustainable ocean, to in turn create a stronger and more resilient planet. We are a charity and independent research facility, and an academic partner of the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) with around 200 students at any one time.

Our science spans almost all marine disciplines, including oceanography, marine ecology and biology, biotechnology, and polar sciences. We operate coastal laboratories, data monitoring stations, research vessels, and advanced flying and diving robotics, enabling us to conduct impactful research both locally and globally.

Through marine science, SAMS is tackling the world’s most urgent issues, such as climate change, loss of habitats and biodiversity, & finding the sustainable resources for growing populations. We are changing how humans use & look after the global ocean - protecting it for people, for planet, for the future.
